Speaking about the awards, Mr. Nirbhay Kanoria, Founder of BK Awards, said, “There are some really talented authors in India who write specifically for children, but they don’t get the credit they deserve. So it’s a project which I started in honor of my grandfather to recognize authors, and through this I aim to improve the literary landscape for all Indian children’s authors.”

The Binod Kanoria Prizes for Children’s Literature was established in honor of Shree Binod Kanoria, an industrialist from Mumbai who loved children and books. It celebrates the best of original Indian children’s writing and illustration. The award recognizes that high-quality creative content for children has an important role to play in a child’s life. And that children’s literature is a unique and precious space in the literary field that deserves an exclusive prize specially designed for this genre.

The prize will include a cash prize with a citation as a much-needed incentive to create high quality original works of writing and illustration. We believe that such an award will encourage creators of children’s literature to aspire to greater creative heights. We will also help children and parents choose books that will support the habit of reading and help expand the market for Indian children’s books.

Each of the awards is decided by a three-person jury of the most experienced and respected names in publishing, education and children’s library/reading professionals.

This year, the jury for the first and second cycle of English was composed of: Anushka Ravishankar, author and publisher for children; Anita Roy, children’s author and editor; and Dalbir Kaur Madan, librarian and reading specialist.

The Hindi jury consisted of Shree Arun Kamal, Hindi poet and winner of the Sahitya Akademi Prize; Sonika Kaushik, educator and reading literacy specialist; and Kamlesh Joshi, Teacher Trainer, Azim Premji Foundation.
